On 18 September, the Sanlitun Subdistrict New Era Civilization Practice Center and the Sanlitun International Volunteer Service Team held the first World Story House reading and language-learning session for primary-school children. Team leader Adam Yuan and Russian volunteer Yeva joined five families for picture-book sharing and conversations about volunteering.
Yeva introduced themes from the UN Sustainable Development Goals in child-friendly language, including quality education, healthy living, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. She encouraged children to help others, conserve resources, protect the environment, respect different cultures and take part in community service.
Adam Yuan explained the team's purpose: to use language, smiles and practical action to offer friendly assistance to Chinese and international residents and visitors, helping people in Beijing and Sanlitun feel welcome and respected.
During the My Small Wishes for Our Community discussion, five children shared experiences such as moving bicycles away from tactile paving, helping a blind person cross the road and collecting litter beside the Liangma River with family members. They explored how giving directions and offering a friendly greeting can also contribute to a welcoming community.
